How It Works

This calculator converts your project dimensions into cubic yards of topsoil and shows how many truck loads you will need for delivery.

Formula: Cubic Yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) / 12 / 27. The depth is converted from inches to feet first, then the volume in cubic feet is divided by 27 (cubic feet per cubic yard).

Truck load estimates help you plan delivery. A standard pickup holds about 1 cubic yard, while dump trucks range from 5 to 20 cubic yards depending on size.

Cost estimates use a range of $25-$55 per cubic yard, which covers screened and unscreened topsoil in most markets. Delivery fees are not included.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much topsoil do I need?

Measure the length and width of your area in feet and decide on a depth. For new lawns, use 4-6 inches. For garden beds, use 6-12 inches. For topdressing an existing lawn, 1-2 inches is sufficient. Multiply length × width × depth (in feet) and divide by 27 to get cubic yards.

How much does a cubic yard of topsoil weigh?

Topsoil weighs approximately 2,000-2,400 lbs per cubic yard depending on moisture content. Dry topsoil is closer to 2,000 lbs while damp topsoil can weigh 2,400 lbs or more. A standard pickup truck can safely carry about 1 cubic yard.

How much does topsoil cost?

Topsoil typically costs $25-$55 per cubic yard for bulk delivery. Screened topsoil is at the higher end, while unscreened fill dirt is cheaper. Bagged topsoil from a garden center costs significantly more per cubic yard — around $100+. Delivery fees usually range from $50-$150.

What size dump truck do I need?

A pickup truck holds about 1 cubic yard. A small dump truck carries about 5 cubic yards. A standard dump truck holds 10 cubic yards, and a large dump truck can carry 15-20 cubic yards. For most residential projects under 10 cubic yards, a small dump truck delivery is the most common choice.

What is the difference between topsoil and garden soil?

Topsoil is the top layer of natural soil, screened to remove debris. It is good for filling, grading, and establishing lawns. Garden soil is topsoil blended with compost and other organic matter, making it richer in nutrients. Use garden soil for raised beds and planting, and topsoil for grading and lawn establishment.
