How It Works

This calculator converts your project dimensions and sand type into cubic yards and tons so you can order accurately.

Formula: Cubic Yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) / 12 / 27. Then Tons = Cubic Yards × Density (lbs/yd³) / 2,000.

Sand density varies by type. Play sand weighs about 2,500 lbs per cubic yard while paver base sand weighs about 2,800 lbs per cubic yard due to its coarser composition.

Cost estimates range from $25-$50 per ton for bulk sand delivery. Bagged sand from retail stores costs significantly more per ton equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sand do I need?

Measure the length and width of your area in feet and the desired depth in inches. Multiply length × width × depth (converted to feet by dividing by 12), then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. This calculator also converts to tons based on the sand type you select.

What type of sand should I use for pavers?

Use paver base sand (also called leveling sand or bedding sand) for the layer beneath pavers — typically 1 inch deep. For filling joints between pavers, use polymeric sand which hardens when wet and prevents weed growth. Mason sand also works well as a bedding layer.

How much does sand cost?

Sand typically costs $25-$50 per ton for bulk delivery. Play sand and fill sand are on the lower end, while specialty sands like mason sand cost more. Bagged sand from a hardware store costs significantly more — about $4-$6 per 50 lb bag, which works out to over $150 per ton.

How many tons of sand are in a cubic yard?

Most sand weighs between 2,500 and 2,800 lbs per cubic yard, or about 1.25 to 1.4 tons. Play sand is lighter (~1.25 tons/yd³) while paver base sand is denser (~1.4 tons/yd³). Moisture content also affects weight — wet sand is heavier.

How deep should sand be under pavers?

The sand bedding layer under pavers should be exactly 1 inch deep after compaction. Too much sand (over 1.5 inches) can cause pavers to shift and settle unevenly. Below the sand layer, you also need 4-6 inches of compacted gravel base for proper drainage and stability.
